for security a car alarm seems reasonable, however, i would hate to roll over and have my alarm go off when i'm sleeping.  any thoughts?

I have a simple and inexpensive Viper 3100 in my van. The alarm will go off if a "shock" is sensed, but that is adjustable. If adjusted correctly, you shouldn't have a problem. I also have a second siren installed, INSIDE the van. The idea is that it's so loud, that even if someone wants to take a chance of stealing items while the alarm is wailing, it will be too uncomfortable inside the van to do so. Believe me, it's loud!

Another thought is to add a "pin" (spring loaded switch) to sense if your hood is forced open. If you're handy, it's an easy installation. You can add one to your gas cap cover also.
